			In het geval van een non-inferioriteitshypothese is - in tegenstelling tot superioriteitsstudies - de intention-to-treat-set niet de 'conservatieve' aanpak. In het geval van non-adherence wordt het contrast tussen de twee groepen verdund. Daarmee vergroot je (ten onrechte) de kans op het bevestigen van non-inferioriteit. 			Het verschil komt kortweg neer op het volgende. In een gewone (superiority) test is de nulhypothese 'geen verschil' en de alternatieve hypothese 'wel verschil'. Een kleine p-waarde duidt richting de alternatieve hypothese dus duidt een verschil (bijv tussen groepen) aan. Bij een equivalentie test is de null hypothese dat er juist wel een verschil is (wat een verschil is wordt bepaald door de limit of equivalence). De alternatieve hypothese is dat er geen verschil is. Een kleine p-waarde duidt richting de alternatieve hypothese, dus duidt equivalentie aan (geen verschil tussen groepen).
